Low Serum Vitamin C Levels Found in Cancer Patients
In a study involving 57 cancer patients between the ages of 19 and 80 years and 22 healthy subjects, significantly higher levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and significantly lower serum vitamin C levels were found in patients with cancer, as compared to healthy controls. The authors conclude, "Serum low levels of vitamin C in the different type of cancer patients in spite of adequate daily intake may be due to increased utilization to scavenge lipid peroxides as well as their sequestration by tumor cells."

Save Bio-Identical Hormones
By The American Association for Health Freedom

AAHF is proud to partner with the HOME (Hands Off My Estrogens!) Coalition, together we are working to protect access to bio-identical estriol. This issue is urgently important, and now is the time to act! Preserve our access to bio-identical hormones and protect the right of the consumer to choose and the practitioner to practice without unwarranted interference by the FDA.

On January 9, 2008, the FDA sent numerous pharmacies, large and small, an order to stop using Estriol, and the term bio-identical in their hormone replacement formulas. This is an unprecedented attack on compounders, patients and physicians because until now NO compounded drug component with a USP monograph has been withdrawn from circulation unless there has been evidence of harm to patients. Yet that is what the FDA is doing! If they can do it to Estriol, they can do it to anything they wish to!

Serum vitamin C and the prevalence of vitamin C deficiency in the United States: 20032004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
Background: Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may be the most important water-soluble antioxidant in human plasma. In the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III, 19881994), {approx}13% of the US population was vitamin C deficient (serum concentrations <11.4 mol/L).

Objective: The aim was to determine the most current distribution of serum vitamin C concentrations in the United States and the prevalence of deficiency in selected subgroups.

High Plasma Folate and Sufficient Vitamin B12 Linked to Lower Risk of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia
In a study involving 376 premenopausal women of childbearing age who tested positive for infections with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and were diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or higher (CIN 2+, cases) or those with <or=CIN1 (non-cases), women with supraphysiologic concentrations of plasma folate (>19.8 ng/mL) who also had sufficient plasma vitamin B12 (>or=200.6 pg/mL) were found to have a 70% lower odds of being diagnosed with CIN 2+, as compared to women with plasma folate <or=19.8 ng/mL or plasma vitamin B12 <200.6 pg/mL.

Vitamin K, an example of triage theory: is micronutrient inadequacy linked to diseases of aging?
ABSTRACT : The triage theory posits that some functions of micronutrients (the {approx}40 essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids) are restricted during shortage and that functions required for short-term survival take precedence over those that are less essential. Insidious changes accumulate as a consequence of restriction, which increases the risk of diseases of aging. For 16 known vitamin Kdependent (VKD) proteins, we evaluated the relative lethality of 11 known mouse knockout mutants to categorize essentiality. Results indicate that 5 VKD proteins that are required for coagulation had critical functions (knockouts were embryonic lethal), whereas the knockouts of 5 less critical VKD proteins [osteocalcin, matrix Gla protein (Mgp), growth arrest specific protein 6, transforming growth factor ©¬inducible protein (Tgfbi or ©¬ig-h3), and periostin] survived at least through weanin.
