Garlic May Counteract Key Cancer Process
Nitrosation is a cellular process in which substances in foods and the water are converted into cancer-causing compounds. Earl H. Harrison, from Ohio State University (Ohio, USA), and colleagues developed a new urine test that measures for compounds related to cancer risk while detecting the levels of N-nitrosoproline and N-acetyl-S-allylcysteine, compounds abundantly present in garlic.
spinach Men¡¯s Health
Magnesium May Reduce Men¡¯s Colon Cancer Risk
Magnesium is an important mineral that helps to maintain genomic stability, and it serves as an essential cofactor for DNA synthesis and repair. In that previous studies have shown magnesium intake to be inversely associated with colorectal cancer, Enbo Ma, from Japan¡¯s National Cancer Center (Tokyo, Japan), and colleagues examined the association between dietary intake of magnesium and colorectal risk among Japanese men and women.
Papaya Functional Foods
Papaya Extract Slows Cancer Cell Growth Risk
Papaya has been used in traditional herbal medicine in Asia and Australia as a remedy for a variety of diseases. Nam Dang, from University of Florida (USA), and colleagues studied extracts of papaya leaf to ascertain the cellular mechanism of action of its potential role in inhibiting the growth of tumor cell lines.

Who¡¯s Who in Anti-Aging
and Regenerative Medicine
Week of April 1, 2010
Daniel Edmundowicz, MS, MD, FACC
Dr. Daniel Edmundowicz serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Director of Preventive Cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center¡¯s (UPMC) Cardiovascular Institute. Since joining the faculty of the UPMC Cardiovascular Institute in 1996, Dr. Edmundowicz has headed the section of Preventive Cardiology including the Cholesterol Management Program and, since its inception in 1998, the Electron Beam CT cardiac imaging program. He has recently been appointed as Director of Cardiovascular Medicine at UPMC Passavant, a 300 bed tertiary care hospital in the UPMC system. As a result of collaboration with colleagues in the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, he has authored several publications describing the clinical utility of subclinical vascular disease imaging and stratifying cardiovascular risk. He has lectured nationally on topics including cholesterol management and cardiovascular risk reduction .
Dr. Edmundowicz speaks on "Healthy Aging of the Cardiovascular System: When to Start and What to Do" at the Spring 2010 Session of the Annual World Congress on Anti-Aging Medicine & Regenerative Biomedical Technologies..
Social Behavior
Social Engagement Spreads Kindness
In that social networks are thought to influence the evolution of cooperation amongst individuals, James H. Fowler, from University of California/San Diego (UCSD; California, USA), and colleagues explored how cooperative and uncooperative behaviors spread among people. The team found that when study participants played a game in which they had an opportunity to cooperate with one another, people who received a donation of money were more likely to donate money to other people in future games.
Teapot Bone and Dental
Green Tea May Promote Dental Health
Green tea is rich in polyphenols, compounds which have been suggested by previous studies to confer a wide range of health benefits, such as reducing the risk of Alzheimer¡¯s Disease and certain cancers, improving cardiovascular and oral health, and assisting in weight management. Yasushi Koyama, from Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine ( Japan), and colleagues assessed data compiled from 25,078 people, ages 40 to 64 years, who participated in the Ohsaki Cohort 2006 Study.

Cancer: Non-Toxic Therapies,
by Dr. Mark Rosenberg, MD
Nearly half of all patients will get cancer during their lifetime, yet more than 50% of these cases can be prevented. Traditional cancer treatment is efficacious for early stage cancers, yet an overall survival benefit of less than 5% has been achieved in the adjuvant treatment of breast, colon, and head and neck cancers.
The Fellowship in Integrative Cancer Therapy, presented by Mark Rosenberg, MD, offers safe and effective protocols engaging off-label pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, vaccines and other types of immunotherapy, novel drugs/
