Serum Homocysteine and Folate Concentrations Are Associated with Prevalent Age-Related Hearing Loss
Elevated total serum homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations associated with vitamin B-12 or folate deficiencies may adversely affect blood flow to the cochlea, leading to age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). However, only 2 small cross-sectional studies have assessed the link between folate, vitamin B-12, or tHcy and presbycusis. We aimed to determine both the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between serum concentrations of folate, vitamin B-12, or tHcy and risk of age-related hearingloss. The Blue Mountains Hearing Study is a population-based survey of age-related hearing loss (1997–1999 to 2002–2004).

Dietary Factors, Mediterranean Diet and Erectile Dysfunction
ABSTRACT: Introduction. Although epidemiological evidence seems to support a role for lifestyle factors in the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction (ED), limited data are available suggesting that dietary changes may improve ED.
Aim. To provide an update on clinical evidence regarding the role of dietary factors in ED.
Methods. A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE and other database (EMBASE, SCOPUS) with MeSH terms and keywords for "erectile dysfunction", "diet", "dietary patterns", "Mediterranean diet", and "lifestyle".

Green Tea Supplementation Affects Body Weight, Lipids, and Lipid Peroxidation in Obese Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome
Objective To compare the effects of supplementation of green tea beverage or green tea extracts with controls on body weight, glucose and lipid profile, biomarkers of oxidative stress, and safety parameters in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome.
Design Randomized, controlled prospective trial.
Setting General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC).
Subjects Thirty-five subjects with obesity and metabolic syndrome were recruited in age- and gender-matched trios and were randomly assigned to the control (4 cups water/d), green tea (4 cups/d), or green tea extract (2 capsules and 4 cups water/d) group for 8 weeks. The tea and extract groups had similar dosing of epiogallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the active compound in green tea.

Metabolic syndrome as a risk factor for high-ocular tension
Objective: To investigate the relationship between the metabolic syndrome and intraocular pressure (IOP). Methods: An observational study was conducted in a medical health checkup program at a general hospital. This study involved 14,003 apparently healthy Japanese men and women, 18–83 years of age, with a mean IOP of 14.8 (3.0) mm Hg. IOP was examined by noncontact tonometer. High-ocular tension was defined as IOP >21mm Hg without optic-disc abnormalities or history of receiving any anti-glaucoma therapy. Modified criteria of the revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (rATPIII), the new International Diabetes Federation definition, and the Japan Society for The Study of Obesity definition were used to characterize the metabolic syndrome. Air temperature was assessed from the Gifu Meteorological Observatory, Gifu, Japan.
