힘들게 살을 빼고도 5년 안에 원래대로 돌아가는 사람이 태반이다. 아주 적은 사람들만이 줄인 몸무게를 계속 유지하는데, 이들은 공복 상태에서 맛난 음식을 보면 뇌가 강한 경계 모드로 돌입하는 것으로 확인됐다. 강철 같은 마음을 갖기 않으면 요요를 막기 힘들다는 결론이다.   
미국 미리암 병원의 지니 맥캐퍼리 박사 팀은 정상 체중 18명, 비만 16명, 13kg 이상 감량한 몸무게를 3년 넘게 계속 유지하는 사람 17명을 대상으로 식탐의 정도를 뇌 사진으로 관찰했다.
공복 상태를 만들기 위해 4시간 동안 아무 것도 먹지 않은 이들에게 연구진은 치즈버거나 핫도그 같은 고칼로리 음식, 샐러드나 야채와 같은 저칼로리 음식, 바위나 나무 같은 중성적 사진들을 보여 주면서 이들의 뇌 활동을 자기공명영상(MRI)으로 촬영했다.
그 결과 감량 상태를 유지하는 사람의 뇌 활동은 다른 그룹과 확연히 달랐다. 특히 맛난 음식을 봤을 때 이들의 뇌에선 좌뇌 윗부분과 우뇌 중간 부분이 강하게 활성화됐다. 이는 자제력이 강력하게 발동하고 있다는 증거라고 연구진은 밝혔다.
맥캐퍼리 교수는 “감량 상태를 유지하는 비결은 마인드 컨트롤에 있다는 사실을 이번 연구를 통해 알 수 있다”고 말했다.
이 연구 결과는 ‘미국 임상 영양학 저널(American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)’ 최신호에 소개됐으며 미국 온라인 과학뉴스 사이언스 데일리, 미국 의학 웹진 메디컬뉴스투데이 등이 15일 보도했다.

공들여 살을 빼더라도 조금만 방심하면 금세 다시 살이 찌는 요요현상은 체내의 특이한 전환효소 때문이며 이 효소 수치가 낮은 사람은 같이 다이어트에 성공해도 오랜 기간 날씬한 몸매를 유지하는 것으로 나타났다.
영국을 포함한 유럽 8개국 공동 연구진은 다이어트에 성공한 사람이 앞으로도 날씬한 몸매를 잘 유지할 지 간단히 혈액검사로 미리 알 수 있는 방법을 찾아냈다. 즉, 다이어트에 성공한 사람들의 혈중 단백질 효소수준의 특성을 보면, 어떤 여자가 다이어트를 중단했을 때 원래 몸무게로 돌아가기 쉬운지 알 수 있다는 것이다.
공동연구에 참여한 비만 전문의들은 다이어트에 성공한 96명의 혈액을 분석했다. 다이어트 참여자의 절반은 다이어트를 마친 뒤 몸무게가 그대로이거나 더 줄었지만, 나머지 절반은 요요현상으로 다시 살이 쪘다.
혈액을 토대로 34가지 단백질 효소 검사를 한 결과, 연구진은 여자에게 요요현상을 부르는  안지오텐신 전환효소를 발견했다. 이것은 혈관을 수축시켜 혈압을 올라가게 하는 효소로, 날씬한 상태를 오래 유지하는 사람은 다이어트 도중 이 효소 수준이 크게 줄었다.
안지오텐신 전환효소의 수치가 왜 요요현상의 발생여부를 결정하는지는 명확하지 않다. 이 효소가 포만감을 느끼는 호르몬 분비를 방해하고 몸에 더 많은 지방과 물을 저장하도록 유도한다고 연구진은 추정하고 있다.
연구결과에 따르면 다이어트 때문에 단기간에 살을 빼면 심장마비 같은 심장병 위험이 높아지고 일찍 사망할 수도 있다. 뇌졸중 또는 당뇨와도 관련이 깊으며 면역체계가 망가져 쉽게 감염될 수도 있다.
일부 전문가들은 “몸무게가 고무줄처럼 늘고 줄기를 반복하는 것보다는 차라리 아예 다이어트를 하지 않는 것이 더 낫다”고까지 주장하고 있다.
영국 케임브리지 대학 영양센터 수잔 제브 박사는 "일반적으로 알려진 것과 대조적으로 사람은 쉽게 살을 뺄 수는 있지만 날씬한 몸매를 유지하기가 어렵다“면서 ”살을 어떻게 빼느냐보다 어떻게 좋은 상태를 이어갈 것인지에 초점을 맞춰가야 한다“고 말했다.
이 연구결과는 미국 공공과학도서관 저널(PLos ONE)에 게재됐으며 영국 일간지 데일리메일 온라인 판 등이 24일 보도했다.
