자녀 많은 부모, 나이 들수록 행복

잘 자란 자녀는 재정적-감정적 이익 주는 존재

자녀 수가 많은 부모는 젊을 때는 실감하지 못하지만 나이 들수록 행복해하며 젊은 부모들은 돌봐야 할 자녀 수가 적을수록 행복감을 느낀다는 연구결과가 나왔다.
미국의 펜실베니아대학과 독일의 막스플랑크인구통계학연구소(MPIDR) 연구진은 1981년부터 2005년까지 86개국에서 남녀 20만 명 이상을 조사한 ‘세계 가치 조사(World Value Surveys, WVS)’ 데이터를 바탕으로 자녀 수와 행복감의 연관 관계를 연구했다.
그 결과 자녀 수가 많은 것이 부모가 젊을 때에는 행복과 거리가 있게 느껴지지만 50세가 넘어선 부모에게는 행복감을 키우는 것으로 나타났다.
즉, 부모 나이가 30세 이하면 자녀 수가 늘 때마다 걱정이 늘고 행복도는 감소하지만 30~39세면 자녀 4명까지 행복하다고 느끼며 50세 이상이면 자녀 수에 몇이든 행복하다고 생각했다.
나이가 젊은 부모들은 자녀를 기르느라 잠을 못 자고, 자녀에 대한 걱정이 늘며, 살림에 드는 돈이 늘어나기 때문에 아이가 늘어나는 데 소극적이지만 나이 든 부모는 자녀들이 대부분 이 시기를 지났기 때문에 그런 부담이 적다.
막스플랑크 연구소 관계자는 “자녀는 행복하기 위한 장기 투자”라며 “자녀가 잘 자라면 성별이나 수입, 혼인여부를 떠나 부모의 관점에서 만족도가 높아진다”고 말했다.
