Diet
Fruits & Vegetables Promote Kidney Health
In patients with kidney disease, the Western diet produces an acidic environment in the body that has numerous negative effects and worsens with age as kidney function declines. Nimirit Goraya, from Texas A& M College of Medicine (Texas, USA), and colleagues assessed whether consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables that counteract this acidity might improve the kidney health.

Alpha-Carotenes Linked to Longevity
Yellow-orange vegetables (such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and winter squash) and dark-green vegetables (including broccoli, green beans, green peas, and spinach) are foods rich in the antioxidant alpha-carotene. Chaoyang Li, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Georgia, USA), and colleagues assessed the relationship between alpha-carotene and the risk of death among 15,318 adults, ages 20 and older, who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Follow-up Study.

Music-Based Exercise Reduces Fall Risks
Among aging men and women, falls represent a major adverse event that can lead to significant disability, or death. Andrea Trombetti, from the University Hospitals and Faculty of Medicine of Geneva (Switzerland), and colleagues studied a group of 134 community-dwelling seniors, average age 75.5 years. who were randomized to six months of one-hour weekly sessions of a music-based exercise program, or to a six-month delay (after which they could participate in the program).

Combined Exercise Regimen Reduces Diabetes Marker
A number of previous studies have suggested a range of health benefits for a combined resistance and aerobic exercise program. Timothy Church, from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (Louisiana, USA), and colleagues conducted a nine-month long study known as HART-D -- Health Benefits of Aerobic and Resistance Training in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes, which included 262 sedentary men and women with type 2 diabetes and levels of hemoglobin A1c, a marker of blood sugar, at 6.5% or higher.

Retirement Promotes Well-Being
Previous studies have suggested a number of health benefits of retirement. Hugo Westerlund, from Stockholm University (Sweden), and colleagues assessed the health effects of retirement using data collected in the GAZEL study, which followed workers at a French national gas and electricity company, for a 15-year period.
