Erectile dysfunction and testosterone screening with prostate specific antigen screening at age 40
Assess support for a recommendation to add screening for both erectile dysfunction (ED) and hypogonadism to the initial medical evaluation of young-to-middle aged (= 40 years of age) men in light of recent guidelines suggesting prostate-specific antigen screening occur at that age.
A search of literature published from 1998 to 2009 was performed. Search terms included: ED combined with coronary artery disease (CAD), metabolic syndrome and hypogonadism, hypogonadism and ED, hypogonadism, ED and mortality. Articles were evaluated according to the Center of Evidence-Based Medicine.

Selenium and the Thyroid: A Close-Knit Connection
Context: The recent recognition that the essential trace element selenium is incorporated as selenocysteine in all three deiodinases has decisively confirmed the clear-cut link between selenium and thyroid function. It has additionally been established that the thyroid contains more selenium than any other tissue and that selenium deficiency aggravates the manifestation of endemic myxedematous cretinism and autoimmune thyroid disease.
Evidence Acquisition: Clinical reports as well as a large number of biochemical articles linking selenium to thyroid have been considered. Interventional, prospective, randomized, controlled studies, including large observational studies, supplementing selenium in autoimmune thyroid disease, together with review articles published in Medline and Pubmed have undergone scrutiny. The methodological differences and variety of results emerging from these trials have been analyzed.

Keeping Your Home Toxic-Free During the Holidays
We come into contact with environmental toxins in our everyday lives, but the holiday season can bring additional toxins that can further wreak havoc on our hormones. Many of these toxins can mimic other hormones like estrogen and thyroid which lead to an imbalance with other hormones. Some toxins can accumulate in tissues of glands, which inhibits our hormone production.
Toxins can be found in some holiday decorations and products. Synthetic scents from holiday air fresheners and scented candles contain phthalates and parabens that can disrupt hormones. Instead, light candles made from soy or beeswax. They burn clean and don¡¯t emit dangerous chemicals. Excess Christmas tree trim and cinnamon sticks also work well to make your house smell like the holidays.

Longitudinal Study of Insulin Resistance and Sex Hormones over the Menstrual Cycle: The BioCycle Study
Context: Conflicting findings have been reported regarding the effect of menstrual cycle phase and sex hormones on insulin sensitivity.
Objective: The aim was to determine the pattern of insulin resistance over the menstrual cycle and whether variations in sex hormones explain these patterns.
Design: The BioCycle study is a longitudinal study that measured hormones at different phases of the menstrual cycle. Participants had up to eight visits per cycle; each visit was timed using fertility monitors to capture sensitive windows of hormonal changes.

Structural Decay of Bone Microarchitecture in Men with Prostate Cancer Treated with Androgen Deprivation Therapy
Context: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) used in the treatment of prostate cancer reduces bone mineral density (BMD) and predisposes to fractures. The structural basis of the BMD deficit and bone fragility is uncertain.
Objective and Patients: We investigated changes in bone microarchitecture in 26 men (70.6 ¡¾ 6.8 yr) with nonmetastatic prostate cancer during the first year of ADT using the new technique of high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.
Design and Setting: We conducted a 12-month prospective observational study in the setting of a tertiary referral center.

Cinnamon
Diabetes
Cinnamon Improves Markers of Diabetes
A growing body of evidence suggests that active compounds in cinnamon may improve markers of diabetes. Rajadurai Akilen, from Imperial College London (United Kingdom), and colleagues studied 58 people, average age 55 years, with type-2 diabetes, randomly assigning each to receive either a daily supplement containing a daily two gram dose of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) or placebo, for 12 weeks.
Woman with Smoothie Alzheimer's Disease
Walking Slows Progression of Alzheimer¡¯s
Alzheimer's Disease is a severe neurodegenerative disorder of the brain that is characterized by loss of memory and cognitive decline. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a condition where a person has cognitive or memory problems exceeding typical age-related memory loss, but not yet as severe as those found in Alzheimer's disease; about half of the people with MCI progress to Alzheimer's disease.
Apples Functional Foods
Apples Confer Anti-Cancer Protection
Previous research has suggested that different food matrixes may affect the bioavailability of polyphenols in the colon. In that apples are rich in a diverse array of vitamins, minerals and polyphenol antioxidants, German researchers find that apple smoothies deliver a higher quantity of bioavailable polyphenols to the colon than apple juices or ciders, and may therefore be effective in the prevention of chronic colon diseases.
Aspirin Cancer
Aspirin May Lower Risks of Death from Cancer
Previous studies have suggested that a daily dose of aspirin for 5 years or longer reduces subsequent risk of colorectal cancer. In that other studies have suggested that aspirin might also reduce risk of other cancers, particularly of the gastrointestinal tract, Peter M. Rothwell, from John Radcliffe Hospital (England), and colleagues assessed data from studies involving at least four years of treatment with daily aspirin versus placebo and a total study duration of five years or more.
Exercise Group Mental Health
Positive Outlook Is Key Anti-Aging Strategy
In that complex interactions between biological, psychological, and sociological factors impact longevity and health, Leonard W. Poon, from the University of Georgia (Georgia, USA), and colleagues studied the impact of psychosocial domains on health and quality of life, specifically focusing on: demographics, life events, and personal history; personality; cognition; and socioeconomic resources and support systems.
