Mild Dehydration Carries Larger Risks for Women
Women who suffer (from mild de-hydration are more prone to mood and cognitive disorders than men with the same problem, a study shows.
In his study on the effects of mild dehydration. Prof. Lawrence Armstrong, a nutritionist and physiologist from the University of Connecticut, said women who did not drink sufficient water were more likely to suffer mood swings and weakened cognitive performance.
"Mild dehydration among women can cause them to suffer from decreased consciousness," he said at a meeting of nutritionists in Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday.
"They also will find it hard to concentrate, as well as suffer headaches and anxiety.

Effect of vitamin D supplementation on testosterone levels in men
The male reproductive tract has been identified as a target tissue for vitamin D, and previous data suggest an association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] with testosterone levels in men [vitamin D3].

We therefore aimed to evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation influences testosterone levels in men.

Healthy overweight men undergoing a weight reduction program who participated in a randomized controlled trial were analyzed for testosterone levels. The entire study included 200 nondiabetic subjects, of whom 165 participants (54 men) completed the trial.

Participants received either 83 micrograms (3,332 IU) vitamin D daily for 1 year (n=31) or placebo (n=23).

The New Year is upon us, but instead of setting drastic resolutions for yourself, how about making small changes to your diet that will help balance your hormones and improve your overall health?
First of all, don't set a number for the amount of weight you want to lose. Instead make a resolution to eat healthier and measure your success by the way you feel. Do you have more energy? Are your hot flashes getting better? Are you more focused at work? Are you sleeping better at night? Has your libido increased?

Here are some general guidelines to help get you on track this new year so you can feel like a whole new you:
  • Drink water! - Water is very important for our bodies to detoxify all the toxins that are stored in our fat. Drinking a glass of water prior to a meal can also help you eat less.
  • Plan your meals in advance, even snacks - If you know what you're going to eat when you're hungry the less likely you'll stand in front of the fridge or pantry trying to find something. This is when "less than optimal" foods may enter your mouths.
  • Record what you eat - This helps you lose weight by showing food patterns, monitoring areas of improvement and tracking progress.

Higher Branched-Chain Amino Acid Intake Is Associated with a Lower Prevalence of Being Overweight or Obese in Middle-Aged East Asian and Western Adults
Abstract: Beneficial effects on body weight of supplementation with BCAA, including leucine, isoleucine, and valine, have been observed in animal and human studies. However, population-based studies on dietary BCAA intake and body weight are lacking. The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary BCAA intake and risk of overweight status/obesity among multi-ethnic populations. The International Study of Macro-/Micronutrients and Blood Pressure is a cross-sectional epidemiological investigation in China, Japan, the UK, and the US. The study cohort included 4429 men and women ages 4059 y who were free of diabetes. Diet was assessed by 4 multi-pass 24-h recalls; data on nutrients including BCAA were derived from country-specific food tables. Overweight status and obesity were defined as BMI = 25 and BMI = 30 kg/m2, respectively. Multivariable-adjusted OR of overweight status/obesity and 95% CI by quartiles of BCAA intake were estimated by logistic regression.

Blood Pressure
Whey Protein Helps to Lower Blood Pressure
To reduce the risks of stroke and heart disease, some researchers are focusing on effective ways to safely lower elevated blood pressure in at-risk populations. Beverages supplemented by whey-based protein can significantly reduce elevated blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease.
Woman with Smoothie Diet
Creatine Helps to Boost Brain Function
Previous studies have suggested the role of creatine. a pre-protein compound found primarily in animal meats, in cognitive performance. Typically, vegetarians have lower muscle levels of creatine. David Benton, from University of Swansea (Wales, United Kingdom), and colleagues enrolled 121 young women, both vegetarians and omnivores, in a study in which each subject was randomly assigned to receive either a daily creatine supplement (creatine monohydrate, 20 grams per day), or placebo, for five days.
Apples Cancer
Pomegranate Juice Compounds May Inhibit Cancer Progression
Previously, a 2006 study by University of California/Los Angeles (UCLA; California, USA) reported that prostate cancer patients who daily drank an eight-ounce glass of pomegranate juice demonstrated reductions in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels that suggested a potential slowing of cancer progression.
Aspirin Exercise
Exercise Combats Cognitive Decline
Recognized as a major public health concern, cognitive impairment among the aging population is characterized by frequent falls. In that previous studies have suggested a beneficial role for exercise in fall prevention, Teresa Liu-Ambrose, from the University of British Columbia (Canada), and colleagues studied the role of a strength training exercise program on cognitive function.

Anti-Aging Lifestyle Helps to Preserve Vision
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a major cause of vision impairment among the aging population, affecting one in four people ages 65 and older. Julie A. Mares, from the University of Wisconsin (Wisconsin, USA), and colleagues studied the relationships between lifestyle behaviors of diet, smoking, and physical activity and the subsequent prevalence of AMD.
