농구라는 스포츠가 생긴 뒤 가장 뛰어난 선수 마이클 조던이 1963년 오늘 태어났습니다. 올해와 같은 토끼해에 태어났네요. 조던은 고교 농구선수로 활약한 형의 영향을 받아 농구 선수의 길을 선택했습니다. 형의 반만이라도 잘 하고 싶어서 형의 등번호 45번의 절반인 23번을 배번으로 삼았습니다. 조던은 고교 때 학교 대표팀에서 탈락하는 아픔을 겪었지만 엄청난 노력으로 극복했습니다. 그는 노스캐롤라이나 대학교에 장학생으로 선발돼 입학했고 졸업 후 시카고 불스에 둥지를 틀었습니다. 첫 경기에서 16득점에 그쳤지만 이후 놀랄만한 실력을 발휘합니다. 그러나 그것도 잠시, 이듬해에 발목 부상으로 22경기에 결장하면서 위기에 처합니다. 하지만 그해 최강 보스턴 셀틱스와의 플레이오프 경기에서 63점을 넣으며 화려하게 비상합니다. 보스턴 셀틱스의 또 다른 전설 래리 버드는 “신이 조던의 모습으로 변장했다”고 감탄사를 토해 냈습니다. 조던은 아버지가 10대 강도에게 살해당하자 은퇴를 발표하고 아버지의 꿈이었던 야구 선수로 전업합니다. 마이너리스의 시카고 화이트삭스에서 선수생활을 하다가 17개월 만에 코트에 복귀합니다. 은퇴 시 시카고 불스의 결정에 따라 자신의 등번호가 영원히 사용할 수 없게 되자 형의 배번 45번을 달고. 나중에 누군가가 조던이 옛날의 그 조던이 아니라고 조롱하자 NBA의 제제를 무릅쓰고 다시 23번을 달았지만 말입니다. 그는 1999년 ‘정상에서 물러나겠다’고 은퇴했다가 이듬해 워싱턴 위저즈의 구단주로 나타나기도 했습니다. 그리고 다시 컴백해서 신화를 쓰다가 2003년 40세의 나이로 정말 은퇴합니다. 조던은 실패를 성공의 양분으로 삼아 스스로 신화가 됐습니다. 그의 이 말은 늘 가슴에 울립니다. “나는 선수 시절 9000번 이상의 슛을 놓쳤다. 300번의 경기에서 졌다. 20여 번은 꼭 경기를 승리로 이끌라는 특별임무를 부여 받고도 졌다. 나는 인생에서 실패를 거듭해 왔다. 이것이 정확히 내가 성공한 이유다.”
