신경이 예민한 부부는 잦은 성생활이 결혼생활의 만족도를 높여준다는 연구결과가 나왔다. 예민한 히스테리성 환자들은 화를 쉽게 내는 등 감정 변화가 심해 원만한 이성교제나 결혼생활이 힘든 것으로 알려져 있다.
미국 테네시대학교 미셸 러셀 교수팀은 72쌍의 신혼부부를 4년 동안 관찰했다. 6개월 마다 성생활 횟수와 부부생활 만족도를 조사했다. 이들은 결혼 후 첫 6개월 동안은 평균 일주일에 1번 꼴로 잠자리를 가졌고 4년간 한 달에 3번 정도 성생활을 했다.  
성생활 횟수가 잦다고 해서 반드시 부부생활이 행복하다는 응답과 연결되지는 않았다. 다만, 예외가 있었는데 예민한 성격의 부부들은 성생활 횟수가 많을수록 만족감도 높다고 답했다.
연구진은 “히스테리성 환자들은 걱정이 많고 화를 쉽게 내는 등 배우자와 충돌할 요소가 많아 이혼율도 높은 편”이라며 “하지만 잦은 성생활을 통해 상대와 교감하는 기회가 많을수록 부족한 행복감을 상당부분 회복하는 것으로 조사됐다”고 말했다.  
이 연구결과는 ‘사회심리학과 성격과학(Social Psychological and Personality Science)’에 소개되었으며 과학논문 소개사이트 유레칼러트 등이 8일 보도했다.
