Fat grafts are frequently used for contour restoration of the face. Satisfactory
results can be achieved in the early postoperative period long-term results are
usually disappointing both for surgeons and for the patients. The main problem
is resorption of the graft. Several different procedures have been described to
minimize this matter. To overcome fat resorption, we tried fat grafts under
various condition. The purpose of this study is to observe the histologic and
physical changes of the transplanted fat cells in various environments.
Thirteen male New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. The recipient
sites were prepared on the back of the rabbits and they were divided into four
regions. In area I, fat tissue with preserved lobular structure was transplanted.
In area II, fat tissue with preserved lobular structure after partial excision of
the capsule formed around the silicone sheet was transplanted. In area III, fat
tissue after rinsing with lactated Ringer's solution was transplanted. In area
IV, fat tissue after centrifugation was transplanted. Specimens were obtained
from these sites at the end of the first, third and sixth month. After the
operation, we observed area II with preserved lobular structure and capsule
being formed at 3 weeks having the best result for its volume, macroscopic
and microscopic examination.
